FAREWELL MESSAGE
FROM MISS VIETNAM OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA 1999

DUONG TU NHI

Hoa Hau 99 Duong Tu NhiNearly one year ago, I accepted the responsibility and challenge of entering Miss Vietnam TET Pageant of Northern California. It did not take long for me to realize that competition like the Miss Vietnam Tet Pageant of Northern California serve to encourage young woman of Vietnamese ancestry to be proud of their heritage - one so richly preserved and handed down by our parents and ancestors. Miss Vietnam Tet Pageant of Northern California has been an opportunity for me to embrace my culture in a spirit of competition where one's greatest competition is one's self.

Last Tet, I was blessed with the honor of being crowned Miss Vietnam of Northern California 1999. This title presented me with the rare opportunity to represent the Vietnamese Community. I took great pride in participating in various events such as parades, banquets, fundraisers, award ceremonies, charities, concerts and many other community service appearances. Through these experiences, I gained greater knowledge of my heritage, culture and myself. Along the way, I had the pleasure of meeting a diverse group people who graciously extended their warm hospitality. My heartfelt appreciation and respect goes to everyone who gave me support and guidance, especially to my family and friends.

To Miss Vietnam of Northern California 2000, I welcome you to the Royal Family. Each of the women who have embodies the role of Miss Vietnam Tet Pageant of Northern California before you have contributed something unique to this title and to the representation of culture, virtue, grace, beauty, and intelligence. Now it's up to you. It will not be easy, but you will have to look inside yourself for that strength and conviction to live up to the image. Never forget your roots, beliefs, and who you really are from the image you are portraying. Enjoy your year as I have mine, most importantly.

Tonight, as my reign comes to an end, it will only be the crown that I will be giving away. I will forever treasure the memories, friendships, and invaluable experiences from what had been a truly unforgettable year. I hope that I have been able to give back to the community half of what it has given so generously to me. Thank you.

To the contestants of the Miss Vietnam of Northern California 2000, I wish you all the best of luck. May the year of the Dragon bring everyone happiness, peace, prosperity, and good health. Happy New Year 2000.

Sincerely,
Duong Tu Nhi
